Homozygous ChiE mutants display supernumerary scutellar bristles and, compared to wild-type, decreased number of dorsocentral bristles.

ChiE heterozygotes display supernumerary scutellar bristles.

Homozygotes show loss of dorsocentral bristles and have a slight thoracic cleft. The wings are filled by hemolymph between the dorsal and ventral layers.

ChiE flies show a dominant excess of scutellar bristle phenotype and a recessive loss of dorsocentral sensory organs. Homozygotes also exhibit a mild thoracic cleft.

ChiE heterozygotes exhibit 1.6 dorsocentral bristles per heminotum compared to 2.0 in wild-type controls.

ChiE mutant adults show a thoracic cleft and loss of dorsocentral bristles.

ChiE shows a dominant excess of scutellar bristles. Homozygotes show a mild cleft along the dorsal midline of the thorax together with loss of the dorsocentral and posterior postalar bristles.

Roughly twice as many bristles are generated when scScer\UAS.cPa is overexpressed under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 in a homozygous scA ChiE double mutant background compared with that in a homozygous scA single mutant genetic background.

The ChiE homozygous phenotype of loss of dorsocentral bristles and presence of a slight thoracic cleft is not modified by hemizygosity for Bxhdp-n60.

The ChiE homozygous phenotype of loss of dorsocentral bristles and presence of a slight thoracic cleft is enhanced by hemizygosity for BxD110.

The mutant wing phenotypes of BxD110 and ChiE are mutually suppressed in BxD110/+ ; ChiE flies.

Bxhdp58-1 does not suppress the anterior dorsocentral bristle loss seen in ChiE/+ mutant flies.

Bxhdp185-1 does not suppress the anterior dorsocentral bristle loss seen in ChiE/+ mutant flies.

BxhdpR590 does not suppress the anterior dorsocentral bristle loss seen in ChiE/+ mutant flies.

Bx2 does not suppress the anterior dorsocentral bristle loss seen in ChiE/+ mutant flies.

Bx1002 does not suppress the anterior dorsocentral bristle loss seen in ChiE/+ mutant flies.

The following tup alleles enhance the excess scutellar bristle and thoracic cleft phenotype of ChiE flies when heterozygous: tup1, tup2, tupisl-1, tupE52, tupE53, tupE55, tupE115 and tup2L-57-40. tupE20 enhances the ChiE phenotype when it is hemizygous or homozygous.

Expression of tupScer\UAS.cTa, under the control of Scer\GAL4ap-md544, in a ChiE background causes no wing defects.

Expression of tupScer\UAS.cTa, under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237, partially suppresses the excess scutellar bristle phenotype of ChiE mutants.

Although ChiE flies are viable, ChiE, tupisl-1/+ and ChiE; pnrVE12/+ double mutant flies are lethal.

tou2 ChiE flies exhibit 1.11 dorsocentral bristles per heminotum compared to 2.0 in wild-type controls. Expression of touEP622, under the control of Scer\GAL4ap-md544 in ChiE homozygous flies results in suppression of the dorsocentral bristle loss observed in ChiE mutants. Double mutants exhibit an average of 2.23 dorsocentral bristles per heminotum compared to 2.0 in wild-type. Iswi2/+ ; ChiE/+ flies display on average 1.29 dorsocentral bristles per heminotum, so accentuating the pnrD1/+ single mutant phenotype (1.6 per heminotum).

The addition of osaE17, osa616 or osa4H enhances the thoracic cleft phenotype but suppresses the loss of dorsocentral bristles. The addition of brm2 enhances the thoracic cleft phenotype but suppresses the loss of dorsocentral bristles.

The addition of pnrVX6/+ to heterozygous ChiE flies gives flies that exhibit a thoracic cleft. The addition of pnrVX6/+ to homozygous ChiE flies leads to lethality. The addition of pnrMD237/+ to homozygous ChiE flies produces a semi-lethal phenotype. Escapers exhibit a strong thoracic cleft phenotype. The addition of overexpressed pnrScer\UAS.cHa (when driven by Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237) suppresses the cleft phenotype of homozygous ChiE mutants, though the loss of dorsocentral bristles is not rescued. The addition of apUGO35 or apP44 or apSu(ChipE) to ChiE homozygotes suppresses the thoracic left and loss of bristle phenotype seen in these flies.
