Mutant adults are more susceptible to sustained 37[o]C heat shock than wild-type flies.

Hemizygous males and homozygous females have a significantly reduced lifespan compared to controls, with a median survival of only 14-15 days compared to 50-57 days for wild type.

Very few slprBS06/Y males reach adulthood.

slprBS06/Y mutants (lacking zygotic slpr function) have a low rate of embryonic lethality and a variable lethal phase; some die during the pupal stage, but approximately 10% of the expected number of adults eclose. Mutant embryos lacking both zygotic and maternal slpr function show a dramatically increased embryonic lethality and severe dorsal open phenotype. The maternal effect on lethality can be rescued by a slpr+ paternal chromosome.

Expression of slprD314Y.KM.Scer\UAS.P\T under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS in embryos derived from slprBS06/+ females significantly increases the percentage of embryonic lethality and severity of cuticle defects compared to embryos expressing slprD314Y.KM.Scer\UAS.P\T under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS in an otherwise wild-type background.

slprBS06 male escapers have a number of morphological defects, which are incompletely penetrant. These defects include crumpled wings (42%), genital rotation and eversion defects (37%), dorsal abdominal clefts or segmental fusions (30%), missing or deformed maxillary palps (35%) and rarely, cleft nota (2%).

29% of slprBS06/slpr3P5 escaper adult females have terminalia defects, with truncation of structures posterior to tergite 7, and are unable to defecate or lay eggs. 36% of the escaper females have maxillary palp defects.

Eggs laid by homozygous females have defective, stunted dorsal appendages.

20% of slpr921/slprBS06 escaper adult females have maxillary palp defects.

Expression of slpr::Tak1STCt.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS partially rescues the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Expression of slpr::Tak1STK.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS further enhances the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Expression of slpr::Tak1SAAATCt.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS further enhances the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Expression of slpr::Tak1TSK.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS further enhances the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Expression of slpr::Tak1TSAAA.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS further enhances the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Expression of Tak1Ct.Scer\UAS.P\T.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS further enhances the lethality associated with slprBS06 mutant males.

Df(3R)Dr-rv1/+ restores viability to slprBS06/Y males.

alphXS-88/+, alphS-331/+ or alphS-355 restores viability to slprBS06/Y males.

pucE69/+ restores viability to slprBS06/Y males.

rl1/+ or rlSem/+ does not suppress the lethality of slprBS06/Y males.

The weak lethal phenotype seen in slprBS06/Y mutants is enhanced by Tak12527/+, such that no double mutant adults eclose and there is a slight increase in the relative embryonic lethality and dorsal closure defects of double mutant embryos.

Expression of Tak1K46R.M.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS significantly increases the percentage of embryonic lethality and severity of cuticle defects of embryos derived from slprBS06/+ females.
