Contains a partial, 5-7kb fragment of the roo element located between exons II and III, along with a deletion of 16497bp downstream from this site.
Deletion from within intron 2 to exon 6 of lz (deletion corresponds to nucleotides 9799-26294 of accession number AJ217651). An LTR-like retrotransposon of approximately 8kb is also inserted at the site of the deletion.
Deleted sequence that occurs in conjunction with an 8kb LTR like insertion.
15% of photoreceptor cell clusters are abnormal, cells R1 and R6 are not recruited properly. Uniform sheet of unorganised cone cells is found. The periphery of the retina contains cells in loosely organised clusters including cones as well as primary and secondary pigment cells, the darker pigment produces the 'spectacle' phenotype.
Homozygotes have a total lack of ommatidial structure in the eye. Pigment is dispersed as a ring around the edge of the eye ("spectacle" phenotype). Few, if any lenses form, and the eye is covered by a cuticle scar. The 'retina' appears to lack pigment cells. Photoreceptor cell orientation is random, and the fenestrated membrane is absent.
The antennal funiculus is reduced in size in hemizygous males. All large and small basiconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus are missing, and the number of trichoid sensilla on the antennal funiculus is reduced. The number of coeloconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus is normal. The density of the coeloconic sensilla on the antennal funiculus is increased and the density of the trichoid sensilla on the antennal funiculus is decreased compared to wild-type. Most basiconic sensilla on the maxillary palps are normal, although some are reduced in length.
lzL has visible phenotype, suppressible by P{CH1226-43A10}
lzL has increased cell death phenotype, suppressible by BacA\p35GMR.PH
lzL has eye phenotype, suppressible by P{CH1226-43A10}
lzL has eye disc phenotype, suppressible by BacA\p35GMR.PH
BacA\p35GMR.PH, lzL has eye phenotype
Cell death is blocked in lzL eye discs that are also expressing BacA\p35GMR.PH. The eye appears slightly rougher (indicative of ommatidia trying but failing to form) in the double mutants than in lzL single mutants.
The rough eye phenotype of lzL flies is rescued if they are carrying the P{CH1226-43A10} construct (which contains D. pseudoobscura pseudoobscura fosmid sequence that includes the region orthologous to lz).
