    Hemizygous males have wild-type wings.

flw1 mutant follicle cell clones generate an irregular wavy egg chamber epithelium. Mutant egg chambers are not round or ellipsoid like in wild-type but are either stretched or develop bulges.

    flw1 hemizygotes have normal wings.

flw1/flw6 flies are completely flightless. flw1 flies show a variable indirect flight muscle (IFM) phenotype ranging from normal through disorganised to absent IFMs. IFMs are never present in flw1/Df(1)N110, flw1/Df(1)Hk or flw1/flw6 flies, but the jump muscle (tergal depressor of trochanter muscle) appears normal. The early development of IFMs in flw1/Df(1)Hk pupae appears normal the pretemplates on which the dorsal longitudinal muscles form are present, the dorsoventral muscles also develop normally. Muscle defects become apparent at about 28 hours after puparium formation. Most of the muscles break away from their posterior attachment sites and are found as ball-like structures at the anterior segment boundaries, the sarcomere organisation in these balls appears normal.

DLM and DVMs are scant. Myofibrils are disorganized, with variable fiber diameter, and Z bands are crooked.

Hemizygotes have bubbles beneath the thoracic cuticle and held up wings.

    Statement
    Reference

flw1/+ does not enhance the shorter egg length phenotype seen in Pkn1T/Pkn1T or Pkn2T/Pkn2T germline clones.

The flw1/Y ; puc67BDn/+ combination is semi-lethal (90% of pupae fail to eclose) and surviving males have strong wing defects and occasional third leg malformations.

The flw1/Y ; pucA251.1F3/+ combination is viable. 30% of these flies have wing phenotypes that range from slight defects in the posterior part of the wing to stumps. Flies with the most severe wing phenotypes sometimes have third leg malformations.

The wing defects caused by expression of hepCA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4vg.PU are enhanced in a flw1/Y background; the wings are much smaller and are frequently notched and blistered. The double mutant flies are only 10% viable relative to their flw1/+ ; hepCA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4vg.PU control siblings.

The wing defects seen in flw1/Y ; pucA251.1F3/+ flies are suppressed to wild type by bsk1/+, zip1/+ or sqhE20.E21.

The wing defects seen in flw1/Y ; pucA251.1F3/+ flies are not suppressed by sqhA20.A21.T:Zzzz\FLAG.

Expression of Nop17lScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\His6,T:Hsap\MYC under the control of Scer\GAL4Bx-MS1096 in hemizygous flw1 mutant wings results in severely crumpled and reduced wings.

Expression of Nop17lScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\His6,T:Hsap\MYC under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS is synthetic lethal in a hemizygous flw1 mutant background.

The synthetic lethality resulting from the overexpression of Nop17lScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\His6,T:Hsap\MYC under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS in a hemizygous flw1 mutant background can be rescued by the co-expression of flwScer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1.

The flw1 mutation is lethal in combination with the phosphomimetic sqhE20.E21 mutation. Most flw1/Y; sqhE21.T:Zzzz\FLAG/+ flies are viable, but have a crumpled wing phenotype, resembling that of stronger flw alleles. The Mbs3 mutation does not affect the viability of flw1 mutants.

The addition of Mlc2S66A,S67A does not suppress flw mutant phenotypes.
