Drives expression in a subset of glutamatergic neurons in the larval and adult central nervous system.

ScerGAL4VGlut.PD drives expression in the ellipsoid body rings in the innervation regions of R3 and R4d ring neurons and in a ring proximal to the R3 ring. In the fan-shaped body strong expression is detected in the central layers with weaker signal in the dorsal and ventral layers. Expression is also observed in the nodulus and in the protocerebral bridge (except for two segments on each lateral side). Co-localisation with mGluR protein is observed in the ellipsoid body rings R3 and R4d, in the fan-shaped body, nodulus and protocerebral bridge.

ScerGAL4VGlut.PD is labels a subset of glutamatergic neurons in the medulla, lamina, lobula and lobula plate.

Expression of ScerGAL4VGlut.PD is seen in many, but not all, glutamatergic neurons of the larva, and a few apparently non-glutamatergic neurons. In the adult brain, expression of VGlut shows extensive expression in central neuropil compartments, but is predominantly absent from the mushroom body only being detectable as punctae in the base of the gamma-lobes, the tip but not the base of the alpha-lobe (in contrast to VGlut which is seen in the base), the spur, and faintly in the calyx. Expression of ScerGAL4VGlut.PD does not perfectly reflect expression of VGlut. Expression in the adult brain is seen in a few motor neurons that innervate head muscles. Expression within the ellipsoid body is observed within its inner and outer layers, a pattern suggestive of R-cell innervation. The expression seen in the protocerebral bridge is extensive across all glomeruli, but is weaker in the most distal glomerulus - glomerulus number 8. Expression in the adult optic lobe is strongest in an outer medulla layer and the inner medulla.
