The male-female courtship index and fertility of fruGAL4/fruAJ96u3 males is significantly reduced compared to wild-type. These males court single wild-type males and form chains with males of their own genotype.

34% of fruAJ96u3/fruw12 animals die at midpupal stages (P5-P13). 56% can emerge if dissected from the pupal case. 53% of fruAJ96u3/fruw27 animals can emerge if dissected from the pupal case. These flies have a number of defects including uneverted discs, uninflated wings, abnormal wing position, defective leg joints and duplicated anterior scutellar or sternopleural bristles. 96% of homozygotes die at prepupal stages P4(i)-P4(ii). 14.4% of fruw12/fruAJ96u3 embryos have abnormal Fas2-positive fascicles in the central nervous system. 15.8% of frusat15/fruAJ96u3 embryos have abnormal Fas2-positive fascicles and 17.4% have defects in the distribution and pattern of BP102-positive axons in the central nervous system. 24.5% of fruAJ96u3/fruP14 embryos have abnormal Fas2-positive fascicles and 17.0% have defects in the distribution and pattern of BP102-positive axons in the central nervous system.

The pupal lethality of fruAJ96u3/Df(3R)Exel6179 mutants is rescued by combination with either Dana\fru+t20H8 or Dper\fru+t36N18, the emerging transgenic rescue males are fertile and sing courtship song like Drosophila melanogaster with alternating bouts of pulse and sine song (no species-specific song interconversion).

dsx1 fruP1.LexA/dsxΔ fruAJ96u3 double mutants rescued with Dana\dsx+t21E22 and Dana\fru+t20H8 also sing like melanogaster with both pulse and sine song elements present, wheres mutants rescued with Dper\dsx+t31M5 and Dper\fru+t36N18 only sing normal-pulse song but not the sine song (but still do not display any evidence of cross-species song interconversion).
