Detailed Description

Animals homozygous for In(1)wm4 and heterozygous for Su(var)3-91 have red eyes.

One copy of Su(var)3-91 strongly suppresses position effect variegation (PEV) at the w locus caused by In(1)wm4.

One copy of Su(var)3-91 moderately suppresses the telomeric position effect (TPE) in stocks carrying a variegating P{hsp26-pt-T}39C-5 insertion at the telomere of the left arm of chromosome two.

Heterozygotes show no effect on crossing over between kni and pp.

Suppresses the position effect variegation at the w locus caused by In(1)wm4 and suppresses the position effect variegation at the bw locus caused by In(2R)bwVDe2. Does not effect position effect variegation at the bw locus caused by Byron or the position effect variegation of w seen in the P{wAR}41A insertion.

Strong suppressors of bw and w position effect variegation (PEV).

Dominant suppressor of position effect variegation at the w locus caused by In(1)wm4h.

homozygous viable homozygous fertile

Genetic Interactions

flamA, ctA double homozygotes display significant mortality during the pharate stage as compared to controls, which is suppressed by Su(var)3-91 heterozygosity.

The Scer\GAL4GMR.PU, HersScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG rough eye phenotype is significantly enhanced by Su(var)3-91.

Su(var)3-91/+ suppresses the ability of lid10424/+ to enhance the variegation at the w locus which is seen in the In(1)wm4 chromosome.

The lethality of JIL-1z2 homozygotes is significantly suppressed by one copy of Su(var)3-91 (87.4% viability).

The lethality of JIL-1z2 homozygotes is significantly suppressed by Su(var)3-91/Su(var)3-92 (55.8% viability).

The abnormal polytene chromosome morphology seen in JIL-1z2 homozygous third instar larvae is partially suppressed by Su(var)3-91/+ or Su(var)3-91/Su(var)3-92; the chromosome arms ar to a large extent unfolded with reduced ectopic contacts and there is a clearly discernible banding pattern that in some cases almost resembles the wild-type pattern. However, there is no discernible improvement in the morphology of the male X chromosome in the double mutants.

JIL-1z2/JIL-1z60 flies that have one copy of the Su(var)3-91 allele show greater levels of survival compared to those that carry two wild-type copies of Su(var)3-9.

Has no effect on the frequency of X-Y chromosome nondisjunction seen in Df(1)X-1-53B males.
