shtd1 mutant flies exhibit small eyes with highly disorganised ommatidia.

shtd1 mutants fail to undergo G1 cell cycle arrest in the morphogenetic furrow and exhibit additional cell divisions of the differentiating photoreceptor cells. In adiition the shtd1 mutant is also defective in progression through mitosis and shows significantly increased apoptosis.

shtd1 mutant eye discs show disruptions in both the numbers of neuronal cells in the developing clusters and in spacing of the clusters. Two R8-positive nuclei are seen in each photoreceptor cell cluster in shtd1 mutants, instead of a single nucleus as in wild-type. More posteriorly, after the morphogenetic furrow, wild-type eye discs contain single R8 cells, while shtd1 mutant discs contain R8 doublets.

Multiple types of photoreceptor cells undergo additional rounds of cell division in shtd1 mutants. Despite the observed additional mitosis, a decreased number of R3 and R4 photoreceptor cells are observed.

Cells enter S phase precociously in the G1 arrest domain in shtd1 eye discs.

There is a dramatic increase in apoptosis in the posterior of developing shtd1 eye discs.

An average of approximately 59 mitotic cells are seen in and behind the morphogenetic furrow in shtd1 mutant eye discs as compared to approximately 17 in wild-type. The number of mitotic cells anterior to the morphogenetic furrow is also slightly increased in shtd1 mutants as compared to that in wild-type (18 versus 10, respectively) while no difference is observed in the number of S phase cells in the mutant as compared to wild-type anterior to the morphogenetic furrow.

Mutants have a rough eye phenotype and a severe photoreceptor differentiation defect. Mutants show M phase arrest and premature S phase entry phenotypes.
