Hsap\TP53Scer\UAS.cYa results in a dosage dependent eye degeneration phenotype.

Flies expressing one copy of Hsap\TP53Scer\UAS.cYa under the control of one copy of Scer\GAL4GMR.PS have severely abnormal eyes which are very rough in appearance. The ommatidia lack the regular hexagonal shape seen in wild-type flies and either additional or missing bristles are apparent. The phenotype is more severe if the flies are carrying two copies of Hsap\TP53Scer\UAS.cYa; many ommatidia appear fused, rhabdomeres with irregular shapes are seen and many ommatidia lack pigment cells. In eye discs expressing one copy of Hsap\TP53Scer\UAS.cYa under the control of one copy of Scer\GAL4GMR.PS incorporation of BrdU in the S phase zone corresponding to the second mitotic wave is reduced compared to wild type. In eye discs expressing two copies of Hsap\TP53Scer\UAS.cYa under the control of one copy of Scer\GAL4GMR.PS the S phase zone corresponding to the second mitotic wave is almost abolished. There is a significant increase in cell death posterior to the furrow in these eye discs. Extensive cell death is only seen in the very posterior of the disc.
