Site of nucleotide substitution in mutant inferred by FlyBase based on reported amino acid change.
85% of mutant embryos derived lack denticle row 1 in most denticle belts, and they often have a breach of naked cuticle in segment A1. 10% of mutant embryos have a stronger phenotype, with patches of naked cuticle within denticle belts and sometimes complete replacement of denticle belts by naked cuticle.
When NotumI6 mutant clones are made in the wing disc a ectopic sensory organ precursors are seen. Adult mutant escapers have wings with many ectopic thick mechanosensory bristles and curved chemosensory bristles at the wing margin.
NotumI6/Df(3L)st-f13 larval wing discs are enlarged with an extended wing blade region. Adult escapers show a dramatically increased number of mechanosensory bristles in the wing and have 28 +/- 2 sternite bristles per segment (compared to 19 +/- 2 in wild-type flies). Extra dorsocentral bristles are present on the thorax. Homozygous clones in the wing result in the formation of extra sensory bristles within and adjacent to the clone. Small mutant clones have no phenotype as they are rescued by adjacent wild-type tissue.
