Description

P{PZ} insertion in the intron between exons 3 and 4. The orientation of the P{PZ} element is such that the ry marker gene is towards the 5' side of the pum gene while the Ecol\lacZ gene is oriented towards the 3' side.

Homozygous pum01688 escapers have rare extra wing veins. Trans-heterozygous pum7/pum01688 flies also display extra wing veins.

Trans-heterozygotes of pum1/pum01688 display extra wing veins.

Trans-heterozygotes of pum3/pum01688 display extra wing veins and extra macrochaetae on their notum. The penetrance of the notum phenotype is incomplete.

Trans-heterozygotes of pumMsc/pum01688 display extra wing veins and extra macrochaetae on their notum. The penetrance of the notum phenotype is incomplete.

The notum of pum7/pum01688 escapers display extra macrochaetae. The penetrance of the notum phenotype is incomplete.

The notum of homozygous pum01688 escapers display extra macrochaetae. The penetrance of the notum phenotype is incomplete.

Mutants have a motor axon pathfinding phenotype.

Homozygous females do not lay eggs. Most homozygous larvae survive the pupal stage to eclosion. 40% of homozygous ovaries from third instar larvae have a normal number of germline cells and 60% have an overproliferated germline. By the adult stage, 9.5% of homozygous females have germlineless ovaries, 62% have "differentiated ovaries" (containing recognisable egg chambers and/or germline cells in at least one ovariole) and 28.5% of females have one germlineless and one differentiated ovary. Developing mutant egg chambers sometimes contain few nurse cells but no oocytes. Homozygous female germline clones induced at the third larval instar stage produce "differentiated" ovarioles that contain on average 2.8 +/- 1.7 mature egg chambers. Ovarioles containing a single mature egg and a rudimentary germarium are also seen. Females containing homozygous female germline clones achieve an oviposition efficiency of 85% (for absolute number of eggs laid by the females). These eggs are (derived from females containing homozygous germline clones mated to homozygous males) sometimes capable of developing into adulthood.

Small ovary phenotype.

Additional Comments
Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

The wing nicking phenotype caused by expression of domdsRNA.Sym.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4bbg-C96 is enhanced if the flies are also carrying pum01688.

Heterozygous pum01688 greatly enhances the ectopic macrochaeta phenotype induced by EgfrScer\UAS.cUa overexpression in the notum under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-537.4.

Xenogenetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

pum01688 suppresses the wing posture defects seen upon expression of Hsap\PABPN117ala.Act88F.

Complementation and Rescue Data
Rescued by
Comments

Complementation tested against pumbem female sterility phenotype and gravitaxis and flight defects.

Partially complements the embryonic lethality of the maternal effect alleles pum1, pumMsc and pum7, resulting in viable yet sterile progeny. Partially complements pum02003 and pum03203 for oogenic defects and embryonic lethality.
