br1 mutants persist as third instar larvae for days or even weeks.

br1 females show slightly reduced levels of oviposition compared to wild-type females. The susceptibility of br1 flies to methoprene is not significantly different from wild-type flies.

1% of hemizygous males have a malformed leg phenotype.

Hemizygous males and homozygous females maintained at 21oC have malformed legs at a low frequency (0.4%).

The br1/brnpr-6 and br1/brA47 mothers produce eggs that have reduced dorsal appendages. br1/br5 and br1/br6 females produce eggs that have normal dorsal appendages. br1/brrbp-1 mothers produce eggs that have reduced dorsal appendages, similar to the phenotype seen in br1/brA47 mothers.

Female progeny brA47/br1 survive until adulthood and produce eggs with reduced dorsal appendages. Normal embryos develop that successfully hatch into larvae. Female progeny brnpr-6/br1 survive until adulthood and produce eggs with reduced dorsal appendages.

Viable allele.

Heterozygotes with brnpr-7 display small maxillary palps that are virtually devoid of mechanosensory bristles. Rostral membrane is lost so the proboscis is barely visible.

Failure of salivary gland degeneration. Reduction in dorso-ventral class of indirect flight muscles. Some show proventriculus abnormality: foregut-midgut junction less proventriculus-like in appearance.

Homozygote br1 wings are shorter and wider than wild type. The phenotype of br1 homozygotes is intensified when placed in trans with brnpr-3 resulting in the mlf syndrome. zip interacts with br1 hemizygous males.

41% penetrance of abnormal SEG-TG separation phenotype, 55% of individuals show an abnormal optic lobe position and 35% a brain fusion failure.

Heterozygotes with Df(1)RA19 are partially viable at 29oC, survivors have either short or faded wings.

Heterozygotes with Df(1)br25 have normal viability and br wings.

br1/br1, Rst(1)JH27/Rst(1)JH27 mutants are lethal in both pupal and especially pharate adult stages, but small numbers of escaper adults eclose. When these mutants express the Rst(1)JH+tSt-H.hs transgene, they survive to adulthood. 54% of br5/br1, Rst(1)JH27/+ mutants survive to adulthood but br5/br1, Rst(1)JH27/Rst(1)JH27 mutants are lethal in prepupal/early pupal development. br1, Rst(1)JH3/Y, br1, Rst(1)JHE1/Y and br1, Rst(1)JHD29/Y hemizygotes show good levels of survival. br1, Rst(1)JH3 flies show the same sensitivity to methoprene as br1 single mutant flies. br1, Rst(1)JH27 female escapers show strong reductions in oogenesis. The following double mutant escapers show significantly reduced levels of oogenesis compared to br1 single mutants: br1, Rst(1)JHA3; br1, Rst(1)JH128; br1, Rst(1)JHW3; br1, Rst(1)JHD29; br1, Rst(1)JH3 and br1, Rst(1)JH253.

The expressivity of the defective eye phenotype seen in MetW3 and Met27 flies is not increased by br1.

The frequency of the malformed leg phenotype seen in br1/Y males (1%) is increased if the flies are also heterozygous for Rho172O (12%), Rho1k02107b (55%) or zipEbr (56%). The frequency of the malformed leg phenotype seen in br1/Y males (1%) is not increased if the flies are also heterozygous for Rac1J11/+ (0%) or Rac2314/+ (2%). Expression of LIMK1D522A.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB enhances the frequency of the malformed leg phenotype seen in br1/Y males from 1% to 36%.

br1 fails to show a significant genetic interaction (assayed in terms of a malformed leg phenotype) with RhoGEF21.1, RhoGEF24.1, RhoGEF204291, RhoGEF211-3, E(zip)12-512-5, Rho112-6, E(zip)18-518-5, E(zip)31-631-6 or zip33-1.

At 18oC, 73% of br1/Y ; bs03267/+ animals have malformed legs, at 21oC, the frequency of malformed legs is 15%. At 18oC, 30% of br1/Y ; bsk07909/+ animals have malformed legs, at 21oC, the frequency of malformed legs is 9%.
