Highly sexually dimorphic with respect to suppression of In(1)wm4 and In(2R)bwVDe2. Moderate maternal effects as seen by elevated w+ eye pigment levels in non-suppressor bearing offspring of Su(var) females. Removal of segments of heterochromatin from the genome by loss of the Y chromosome abolishes the suppression of the position effect variegation phenotype. The effect of the Su(var)2-1216 allele is reduced in heterozygotes with Df(2R)M41A10 (which lacks 2R heterochromatin).
Moderate enhancer of variegation at the lt locus.
Su(var)2-1216; Dp(2;2)Mdh3 double mutants display reductions in eye pigmentation.
Dominant suppressor of position effect variegation in eye pigment caused by In(1)wm4 or In(2R)bwVDe2. Dominant suppressor of position effect variegation at the Sb locus caused by T(2;3)SbV. The suppressor effect on the variegation caused by In(1)wm4 is substantially reduced or eliminated entirely in male XO flies lacking a Y chromosome.

Su(var)205unspecified shows semi-lethality with Su(var)2-1216 in females with a Y chromosome.
Originally isolated as a dominant suppressor of the w+ gene on In(1)wm4.
Relationship to Su(var)216 of Sinclair (Sinclair, Mol. Gen. Genet. 191: 326--333) is not discussed.
