Carries the nonsense mutation of its progenitor (Su(z)21) as well as a ~3.5kb deletion of the first two exons and a 4bp insertion (TTCT) at the site of the deletion. The putative TATA box is preserved 8bp upstream of the breakpoint, consistent with this allele being competent for transcription. (It is not known whether Su(z)21.b7 also carries the L120F mutation found in Su(z)21.)

One copy of Su(z)21.b7 is unable to suppress position effect variegation (PEV) at the w locus caused by In(1)wm4.
One copy of Su(z)21.b7 moderately suppresses the telomeric position effect (TPE) in stocks carrying a variegating P{hsp26-pt-T}39C-5 insertion at the telomere of the left arm of chromosome two.
Su(z)21.b7 can show a strong dominant suppression on telomeric Position Effect Variegation (PEV) in stocks carrying a variegating w+mW.hs allele at the telomeres of the second and third chromosome. Has no effect on pericentric and fourth chromosome insertions.
Cuticles of embryos lacking both zygotic and maternal Su(z)2 contribution show no defects apart from occasional head defects.
Isolated on the basis of reverting the dominant z1 eye color suppression associated with Su(z)21. In a z1, wis/Y background, Su(z)21.b7 produces an orange eye colour similar to that found in z1, wis/Y;+/+. The reversion event simultaneously reverted the ability of Su(z)21 to enhance the dominant loss of chaetae phenotype associated with Su(z)2vg62 (Df(2R)vg62) and Su(z)2vgD (Df(2R)vg-D). Heterozygotes with Df(2R)vg-D are viable. Hemizygotes die as larvae/pupae.
