Imprecise excision of a P-element has deleted 630 bp, including the exon 2 acceptor splice site, the ATG, and the sequence coding for the first 32 amino acids of the Shf protein, including the signal peptide.

In shfx33 mutant adult wings the spacing between the third and fourth longitudinal vein is greatly reduced.

The wings of shfx33 hemizygous adults have a reduced distance between L3 and L4 and sometimes have partial deletions of L3. Their eyes and scutellum are also reduced. The scutellum usually lacks bristles.
