Sensilla containing the normal pb1 configuration, consisting of a pb1A cell paired with a pb1B cell, are not found in acj66 mutants. pb1A cells are not observed; rather, most sensilla contain two pb1B cells that are paired in the same sensillum (pb1B, pb1B), and a smaller fraction of sensilla contain a normal pb1B cell that is not paired with a responsive neuron.

Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS, acj6I.Scer\UAS, acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS or acj61,4.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background is able to induce a fenchone odor response, indicating activation of Or85e.

Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS, acj6I.Scer\UAS, acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS or acj61,4.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background suppresses the (pb2C, 0) type of sensilla normally found in acj6PG63 mutants. Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS, but not acj61,4.Scer\UAS or acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS, is able to induce normal (pb2A, pb2B) sensilla.

Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background induces normal (pb2A, pb22B) sensilla in 42% of mutant sensilla.

Expression of acj61,4.Scer\UAS or acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background induces two unexpected types of sensilla. One type contains a normal pb2B cell and a novel ORN that responds to 3-octanol but to no other odorants. This ORN is termed here pb2D. This (pb2D, pb2B) sensillum represents 25 and 21% of the sensilla containing pb2A or pb2B neurons in flies expressing acj61,4.Scer\UAS and acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS, respectively. The second type of sensilla, representing 45 and 53% of the pb2 sensilla in acj61,4.Scer\UAS and acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS expressing flies, respectively, contains a normal pb2B cell and a novel ORN that responds to both 3-octanol and fenchone and is termed her pb2E. Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS also results in pb2E cells. In 33% of cases, the pb2E cell is paired with pb1A, and in 13% of cases, it is paired with as yet unidentified cells.

Expression of acj6I.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background gives rise to a number of sensillum types of which the most frequent (43%) contains a novel neuron, pb2F, paired with an unresponsive neuron.

Expression of acj61,4.Scer\UAS or acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background, fully rescues the sensilla pb1 phenotype, yielding (pb1A, pb1B) sensilla that respond as expected to all odorants tested (ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate, 4-methyl phenol, benzaldehyde, 3-octanol and 4-propyl phenol).

Expression of acj6I.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background, fully rescues the sensilla pb1 phenotype, but, of 32 sensilla containing pb1A or pb1B cells, only 28% are of the (pb1A, pb1B) type. Another 19% are of the (0, pb1B) type. Approximately 16% are of a type not seen in wild-type or acj6PG63/Y mutants (pb1A, 0). In addition, a few sensilla appear to contain either a pb1A cell or a pb1B cell paired with other types.

Expression of acj6J.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background results in approximately 32% of sensilla containing either pb1A or pb1B. Only 5% of sensilla show a complete rescue of the (pb1A, pb1B) phenotype. Another 37% of sensilla contain a neuron with the odor specificity of pb1A paired with a neuron other than pb1B. The remaining 31% of sensilla appear to contain a pb1B neuron paired with another pb1B, with an unresponsive neuron, or with a non-pb1A neuron.

Expression of acj61,4.Scer\UAS, acj61,3,4.Scer\UAS, acj6I.Scer\UAS or acj6J.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4acj6-PG63 in a acj6PG63/Y background rescues the pb3 sensilla.
