Expression of dshhs.PA using a 15 minute 37oC heat pulse at the beginning of pupariation results in a 5.8% increase in the number of microchaetae.

Expression of dshhs.PA at 24 hours after pupariation results in a dominant planar cell polarity phenotype in the wing. This phenotype is suppressed by dshDEP+.hs.

Heat induced expression, by application of hot wax, in distal wing regions results in a strong tissue-polarity phenotype, but no reverse polarity is observed.

Pulses of heat shock during late third instar larvae (108-120 hours AEL) result in the development of supernumerary bristles in the interior of the wing, of stout, slender and recurved types, and biased towards the margin. Ectopic SMCs first appear in the late third instar larvae.

Overexpression of dsh can inhibit bristle formation, independently of wg.

Heat induced expression for 30 minutes between 3 and 4 hours of development causes cardiac hyperplasia, but the hyperplasia is considerably reduced at later stages suggesting the hyperplasia is not a permanent switch to cardiac fate.

The addition of fz23 or pkpk-sple-13 suppresses the wing hair polarity phenotype seen in dshhs.PA animals.

Expression of dshhs.PA using a 15 minute 37oC heat pulse at the beginning of pupariation does not alter the number of thoracic microchaetae produced in NMcd8 animals. The number of microchaetae in Nnd-3 flies is increased to 119.33 +/- 1.54 by expression of dshhs.PA using a heat pulse. The number of microchaetae in Nspl-1 flies is increased to 153.33 +/- 1.42 by expression of dshhs.PA using a heat pulse. The number of microchaetae in NAx-9 flies is increased to 155.33 +/- 1.89 by expression of dshhs.PA using a heat pulse. The number of microchaetae in NAx-E2 flies is increased to 126.23 +/- 1.59 by expression of dshhs.PA using a heat pulse. dxENU dominantly enhances the increase in microchaetae seen when dshhs.PA is expressed using heat shock, increasing the number to 142.12 +/- 2.53 thoracic microchaetae per heminotum.

Induction of wghs.PN along with dshhs.PA potentiates the response to dsh, causing bristles to form well into the interior of the vast majority of wings. The effect of dshhs.PA is potentiated by reduced N or Dl dosage and NΔCDC10.hs and suppressed by extra copies of Dl, N or Nint.hs, NICN2.hs or NΔBam.RV.hs.

Heart formation does not occur in dshhs.PA, wgl-12 flies or dshhs.PA, wgl-17 flies reared at 25oC or 27oC. Heat shock for 30 minutes between 3 and 4 hours of development rescues heart development, often flies exhibit cardiac hyperplasia.
