pn1 third instar larvae exhibit a significant reduction in the percentage of cellular area marked for mitochondria (sqh-mitoEYFP) in the proventriculus cells from the foregut compared to controls. pn1 adults also exhibit brownish-purple eyes and an increased sensitivity to oxidative stress (induced by feeding with paraquat) when compared to controls.
pn1 adults exhibit a significant reduction in the amplitude of locomotor activity rhythm (circadian rhythm) under constant darkness while they exhibit normal circadian periods with normal percentages of rhythmic flies under constant darkness; normal bimodal activity patterns and anticipation under light-dark condition; normal cell bodies and axonal projections of PDF-expressing circadian pacemaker neurons when compared to controls.
Eye colour: brownish-red.
pnhs.4 fails to rescue the lethal interaction of pn1 with awdK. pnhs.3 does rescue the lethality (with or without heat shock) and male progeny are recovered. Eye colour of P{HS-PN+4} transformants remains pn even after several heat pulses, P{HS-PN+3} transformants (without heat shock or with one or numerous heat shocks) exhibit wild-type colouration.
