Gene Summary
Imaginal disc growth factor 6 (Idgf6) is one of six genes in the IDGF family, which evolved from chitinases that lost their enzymatic activity. Idgf6 encodes a secreted protein that is highly expressed in larval fat body and adult head. Idgf6 product is involved in molting and egg chamber tube morphogenesis. Gene Group (FlyBase)
IMAGINAL DISC GROWTH FACTORS -
The Imaginal Disc Growth Factors (IDGF) belong to the 18-glycosylhydrolase family. IDGFs possess a single glyco18 domain which is catalytically inactive and may act as a chitin binding module. (Adapted from FBrf0231276 and FBrf0230884).
Protein Function (UniProtKB)
Probably required to stimulate the proliferation, polarization and motility of imaginal disk cells. May act by stabilizing the binding of insulin-like peptides to its receptor through a simultaneous interaction with both molecules to form a multiprotein signaling complex (By similarity).

Structure
Protein 3D structure   (Predicted by AlphaFold)   (AlphaFold entry Q23997)

If you don't see a structure in the viewer, refresh your browser.
Model Confidence:
  • Very high (pLDDT > 90)
  • Confident (90 > pLDDT > 70)
  • Low (70 > pLDDT > 50)
  • Very low (pLDDT < 50)

AlphaFold produces a per-residue confidence score (pLDDT) between 0 and 100. Some regions with low pLDDT may be unstructured in isolation.

Additional Descriptive Data

Idgf6 transcripts are detected at all developmental stages examined (all but pupae) and in S2 cells on northern blots. Transcripts are detected by in situ hybridization in extracellular spaces occupied by hemolymph. Blots on RNA from dissected tissues shows that a major site of expression is the larval fat body.

CG5210 is missing a critical glutamate residue within the conserved region II of family 18 chitinases and also lacks the C-terminal chitin binding domain. The protein has no chitinase activity in vitro, but it binds chitin tightly.

Chit encodes an abundantly secreted 47kD glycoprotein. cDNA from a Schneider S2 library predicts a protein of 467 amino acids. mRNA and protein are present throughout the entire life cycle. Chit is related to mammalian glycoproteins expressed during immune activation.
