chinmoST/chinmoST mutant males are fertile and exhibit normal testis morphology at 0-1 days old, but display a progressive change in testis morphology, wherein they start to exhibit somatic cells with a follicle cell-like phenotype. At 2-3 days, aggregates of epithelial somatic cells appear adjacent to the hub. Over time, somatic cell aggregates acquire additional cells and extend away from the testis apex; older differentiating germ cells and cyst cells are displaced toward the basal end of testis. In 7-9-day old males, somatic cell aggregates adjacent to the hub remain and a monolayer of columnar epithelial cells lines the testis periphery, resembling ovarian follicle cells; germ cells are restricted to the lumen of the tissue and are arrested at the spermatogonial stage. The arrangement of somatic cells resembles somatic follicle cells within the Drosophila ovary. By 2-3 weeks, arrested germ cells are observed to degenerate. Somatic cells resembling stalk cells become apparent in older chinmoST/chinmoST testes.
