stv1/stv00543 exhibit larval muscle defects and elongated pupae (possibly due to impaired muscle contraction during the larval to pupal transition).

In muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, Z lines are no longer detectable in stv1 homozygotes. Homozygous stv1 mutant larvae behave poorly in locomotion assays.

Heterozygous stv1/+ animals that develop to adult flies suffer from a constant decline of climbing and flying activities during aging, which is accompanied by disruption of Z disc structures.

stv1/stv2 larvae derived from females containing stv- germline clones die during the first larval instar. stv1/stv2 larvae derived from females containing stv- germline clones show severely reduced or no detectable food uptake. Those larvae that show no food uptake do not grow from their hatching size, and those that do show some food uptake show only a minimal amount of growth compared to their zygotically rescued siblings. stv1/stv3 larvae derived from females containing stv- germline clones show only a slight delay in development, however some of these larvae show a failure of the second instar and third instar mouth hooks to separate, preventing the completion of the second moult. stv1/stv2 embryos derived from females containing stv- germline clones have a normal somatic muscle pattern.
