styS88/+ heterozygotes show wild type wing veins.
Homozygous embryos have a tracheal phenotype. styS73/styS88 animals occasionally survive to adulthood. These survivors have an excess of photoreceptor cells in the ommatidia. Transformation of some of the mystery cells to photoreceptors is seen in third larval instar eye imaginal discs. No excess R8 cells are seen (by staining with an anti-boss antibody) indicating that the extra photoreceptor cells are of the R7 type. styS73/styS88 adult survivors have extra wing vein material.
