Insertion between the 5' exons of the P3 and P4 promoters.
Insertion lies between the P1 promoter and the common coding region.

Only 10% of the expected number of fru0-1/Df(3R)fruw24 adults are found compared to control siblings. 7% of fru0-1/fruw9 males are fertile. 24% of fru0-1/fru4-40 males are fertile. 33% of fru0-1/frusat15 males are fertile (this may reflect genetic background effects). 93% of fru0-1/fruM5 males are fertile. 23% of fru0-1/fru3 males are fertile. 25% of fru0-1/fru4 males are fertile. Male-female courtship as measured by wing extension index (WEI) is almost completely abolished in fru0-1/fruw9, fru0-1/fruw12, fru0-1/Df(3R)fruw24 or fru0-1/fruw27 males. fru0-1/fruw9, fru0-1/fruw12 or fru0-1/fru4-40 males show substantial chaining. Homozygotes develop a nearly wild-type muscle of Lawrence.
The numbers of serotonergic-abdominal ganglion neurons and their projections in mutant adult males appear normal or nearly so (in terms of 5-HT expression).
fru0-1/fru0-1 and fru0-1/fru1 males show longer than normal mating-initiation latencies compared to heterozygous controls when mated to a single virgin wild-type female. The mating duration is not significantly different from wild type.
The density of varicosities of the sAbg neurons which are associated with the reproductive organs is nearly normal in fru0-1 males.
Males are more stimulated to court females than fru3 or fru4. All males that exhibit any courtship do exhibit tapping behaviour (tapping of the female with the forelegs). Males, when presented with both sexes simultaneously, will show a courtship bias toward females. Mutant females are courted by wild-type males at normal levels.
A normal size muscle of Lawrence (MOL) often forms in homozygous males. There are slightly more adult muscle nuclei in MOL-position fibres than medial fibres, but these fibres still have significantly fewer nuclei than wild-type male MOL fibres. The number of myoblasts in unaffected.
Homozygous males form courtship chains and behaviourally sterile: failure to curl abdomen in attempted copulation. Some males are fertile and have no 'muscle of Lawrence' (MOL) at all or have an intermediate MOL phenotype: slight thickening or slightly altered insertion sites of the longitudinal muscles. Male heterozygotes with In(3R)fru formed courtship chains but were fully fertile and had an abnormal MOL.
Homozygous males appear normal in size and mobility. Homozygous males show chain behaviour and show incomplete penetrance of fru-like sterility. Heterozygotes never form courtship chains and are fully fertile. fru1/fru0-1 males show chain behaviour, although not as intensely as either fru1 or fru0-1 homozygotes, but are essentially normal in fertility.
