Mutation is leaky, some hemizygous males survive. Viability of these males is reduced at 18oC. Male adult cuticle and bristles are very pale with a yellowish cast. Pupae cases are also very pale. Recovered as suppressor of b; cold-sensitive in males and females. At 25oC, qs2/qs2 females only 1% viable but qs2/Y males as viable as wild type.
Sherald.
Mutation decreases phenol oxidase activity. The thermolabile profile suggest that the thermostable component is absent or altered. At 60oC both the qs2 activators are inactivated within 2 minutes. A large build up of the DOPA pool suggests the function that produces DOPA may not be affected. The catecholamine pool size is reduced.
