E(z)5 dominantly suppresses variegation of the w gene caused by In(1)wm4.

E(z)5 does not dominantly suppress variegation of the w gene caused by P{RS3}panCB-5204-3, P{RS5}5-HA-1902, P{RS5}5-HA-1992 and T(2;3)V21-P{lacW}92E.x3.

The total level of hydrocarbons and the level of 7-monoenes is normal in heterozygous males. The total level of hydrocarbons is normal and the level of 7,11-dienes is significantly decreased in heterozygous females compared to controls.

Phenotypically like ash129. Larval hemizygotes express a small imaginal disc phenotype. Acridine orange staining suggests small size is not due to cell death.

Mutation does not affect the level of w expression in ph-plac+3 flies.

Homozygous and E(z)5/Df(3L)lxd6 animals die just after puparium formation. There are almost no discernible mitotic figures in E(z)5/Df(3L)lxd6 larval brains. E(z)5/E(z)28 males have reduced viability and increased numbers of sex combs compared to wild-type flies. This phenotype increases as the flies are raised at higher temperatures, and is more severe than the phenotype of E(z)5/E(z)28 males at all temperatures.

Imaginal discs of homozygous larvae are small. Defects in the cell cycle: few or no dividing cells, affects chromosome condensation and arrest of the cell cycle at metaphase.

More than 50% of homozygous larvae form puparia, although none of them metamorphose. Mutant larvae have smaller imaginal discs than normal (the maximum size is larger than the size of wild-type late second instar discs but smaller than the size of wild-type young third instar discs) which cannot differentiate into adult structures when injected into metamorphosing normal larvae. The eye-antenna, leg, wing, haltere and genital discs are abnormal. Late second instar mutant wing discs and eye-antenna-brain complexes injected into wild-type adult females grow slightly in in vivo culture, but do not reach the size of wild-type early third instar discs, and are unable to differentiate into adult structures when injected into metamorphosing normal larvae. Wings discs from early third instar wild-type larvae injected into late second or early third instar mutant larvae grow almost as much as control wild-type discs injected into wild-type larvae. These discs can differentiate when injected into metamorphosing larvae. Homozygous clones contain morphologically abnormal structures.

Dominant suppressor of z mutants.

Double heterozygotes with ash122 show T3 to T2 transformations.

Double heterozygotes of E(z)5 with ash128 or ash129 result in transformations of the third leg to the second leg and first leg to second leg. This phenotype is that expected from partial loss of function of Scr and Ubx.
