FlyBase will act to rename a gene in any of these circumstances:

i) when the symbol/name conflicts with our current nomenclature rules;

ii) when the symbol/name is easily confused with a similar symbol/name of a different gene;

iii) when an alternative gene symbol/name is clearly favored by the research community;

iv) to rationalize the nomenclature for an entire gene family or other functional grouping.
