The genes encoding known or predicted enzymes of D. melanogaster are being reviewed based on Gene Ontology (GO) annotations, Enzyme Commission (EC) classifications, and information in specialist online databases and the published literature.
Where orthology relationships are unequivocal and a standardized nomenclature exists in other species, FlyBase will assign the systematic symbol and full name to any currently unnamed Drosophila enzyme-encoding gene.
Where an enzyme-encoding gene has an established nomenclature based on a mutant phenotype (e.g. rosy or ebony), the established nomenclature will be retained and the systematic symbol/name will be added as a synonym as necessary.
Where an enzyme-encoding gene has been previously named based on a molecular function/nomenclature that has since been re-evaluated/revised, then we may re-name that gene to reflect current understanding/usage.
