Comment:

Inferred boundaries of the bdlEX2 deletion resulting from the imprecise excision of P{SUPor-P}KG06404, which removes amino acids 317-719 of bdl (from aa317 to the end of the protein).

Detailed Description

Third instar eye discs of bdlEX2/bdlEX2 mutants do not show significantly different numbers of wrapping glia or total glia, and photoreceptor cell axons project normally into the optic lobe, but wrapping glia exhibit significantly shorter processes, with fewer processes present in the lamina, as compared to wild type. These mutants also exhibit defects in photoreceptor-cell bundle ensheathment by wrapping glia in the optic stalk.

Neither synaptic-layer selection of R1-R6, R7, and R8 axons, nor tiling of R7 and R8 axons, is affected in bdlEX2 mutants.

bdlEX2/+ or co-expression of bdlScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG does not modify the wrapping glial extension phenotype seen in third instar larvae expressing htlGD84 under the control of Scer\GAL4Mz97.

The R7 tiling pattern in homozygous tutl23, bdlEX2 mutants is normal. This effect appears to be R-cell-specific, as similar suppression is observed when bdl is selectively removed in homozygous tutl R cells by performing eye-specific mosaic analysis.

bdlEX2/+ significantly increases the number of correctly targeted R7 axons in LarC12/Lar2127 mutants.

Comments

Expression of bdlScer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4Mz97 in third instar larvae rescues the wrapping glial extension defects seen in bdlEX2/bdlEX2 mutants.
