Homozygous Ubp64E^Δ1 mutant embryos do not display any obvious developmental defects.

Adult Ubp64E^Δ1 mutant flies have a rough eye phenotype, characterised by distorted eye morphology, an irregular facet arrangement and disorganised bristles. Flies also have an extra bristle at multiple ommatidial vertices.

The ommatidia in Ubp64E^Δ1 mutant eye discs are clearly disorganised and frequently contain three instead of four cone cells. Supernumerary photoreceptors are also seen.

The rough eye phenotype observed in both rl¹ mutant adults and csw^lf hemizygous males is exacerbated further by combination with Usp47^Δ1.

One copy of Ubp64E^Δ1 strongly suppresses the adult eye morphology phenotype seen when ttk^69.Scer\UAS is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4^GMR.PF. The cone cell disruption see in pupal eye discs is also suppressed, as is the disruption to the photoreceptor pattern.
