A significant proportion of HcfHR1 homozygous adults show ectopic wing veins and ectopic scutellar bristles, as compared to controls.
Homozygotes survive until the pupal stage, where they show approximately 50% lethality. Of those animals surviving to adulthood, 30% of males and 100% of females are sterile. Homozygous pupae and adults are smaller than normal. The wings are reduced in size, at least partly because of a reduction in cell size.
Homozygous wing discs show normal cell proliferation, but have increased levels of apoptosis compared to wild type.
The ovaries of homozygous females are usually underdeveloped. Egg chamber degeneration at around stage 8 of oogenesis is seen. The females lay some eggs, which are often fragile and smaller than normal, and have abnormally shaped anterior termini and dorsal appendages.
Homozygous adults show loss of humeral bristles (60% penetrance), held out wings (30% penetrance) and an ectopic vein initiating from the posterior crossvein in the wing (60% penetrance). Homozygous males have a reduced number of sex comb teeth (80% penetrance for 9 or fewer teeth/sex comb).

HcfHR1 shows leg defects when in double heterozygous combination with brm1 (20% penetrance), brm20 (10% penetrance) or mor1 (10% penetrance).
HcfHR1/+ enhances the penetrance of the T2 to T1 transformation (reduction of the sternopleural region) seen in Pc1/+ and Pc3/+ flies, from 3% to 60% and from 3% to 40% respectively.
The adult size and humeral bristle phenotypes of HcfHR1 mutants are not affected by Pc1/+, Pc3/+ or E(z)su301/+. The reduced sex comb phenotype of HcfHR1 is not modified by Pc1/+ or Pc3/+. The ectopic vein phenotype of HcfHR1 mutants is suppressed by Pc1/+ and by Pc3/+, whereas it is unaffected by E(z)su301/+.
3% of Pc1/+ ; HcfHR1 males, 4% of Pc3/+ ; HcfHR1 males and 2% of AsxXF23/+ ; HcfHR1 males have defects in rotation of the genitalia.
30% of skd1/+ ; HcfHR1 males have defects in rotation of the genitalia. 30% of skd1/+ ; HcfHR1 flies have extra scutellar bristles. The expressivity of the ectopic wing vein phenotype seen in HcfHR1 mutants is increased by skd1/+.
HcfHR1 is rescued by Scer\GAL4Act.PU/HcfUAS.Tag:T7,Tag:FLAG
Expression of HcfScer\UAS.T:Uuuu\T7,T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4Act.PU at 18[o]C rescues the reduced body size, loss of humeral bristles, held-out wings and ectopic veins seen in HcfHR1 animals.
