Antennal discs from nctST1/nctST3 late third instar larvae display supernumerary sensory organ precursors. In the eye disc, a lack of photoreceptor neuron formation is observed, and the disc is reduced in size compared to wild-type. Mutant leg discs display supernumerary sensory organ precursors and neurons.
nctST1/Df(3R)96ST late third instar larval eye discs are smaller than wild-type.
nctST1 homozygous late third instar larval eye discs are smaller than wild-type.
Homozygous nctST1 large mutant eye disc clones (generated in a Minute/+ background) display very few neurons, and an overall reduction in disc size is observed. On the contrary, small nctST1 clones (generated in a wild-type background) display supernumerary neurons, and extra R8 neurons are present. The nuclei of these extra cells are often observed in basal locations not normally occupied by photoreceptor neuron nuclei, and occasionally some nuclei drop into the optic stalk. These misplaced nuclei are always observed in the posterior region of clones, in the more mature neurons. Apicobasal polarity and epithelial integrity is very occasionally disrupted in these cells.
Nint.U.UAS, NctST3/NctST1, Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 has increased cell number phenotype
NctST3/NctST1 has eye photoreceptor cell | wandering third instar larval stage phenotype, suppressible by Nint.U.UAS/Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1
NctST3/NctST1 has eye disc | wandering third instar larval stage phenotype, suppressible by Nint.U.UAS/Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1
NctST3/NctST1 is a suppressor of ommatidial precursor cluster | wandering third instar larval stage phenotype of Nint.U.UAS, Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1
Expression of Nint.U.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in a nctST1/nctST3 mutant background results in larger third instar eye discs compared to wild-type. The missing neuronal clusters observed in Nint.U.Scer\UAS; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 eye discs are restored in a nctST1/nctST3 mutant background. However, R8 cells are not as regularly arrayed as in wild-type or Nint.U.Scer\UAS; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 eye discs. An increase R8 cell number is also observed, including more than one R8 cell per cluster.
