Expression of RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4c305a significant loss of nighttime sleep that is the result of a decrease in the duration of nighttime sleep episodes, although this is partially compensated for by an increase in the number of nighttime sleep episodes.

Expression of RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU significantly increases green-light avoidance in larvae compared to controls.

Pan-neuronal expression of RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU severely impairs the inhibition of female contact-induced male-male aggression seen in wild type males that have previously been exposed to females.

Scer\GAL4c747-mediated expression of RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS results in significantly enhanced learning after aversive olfactory conditioning (flies trained to associate odors with an electric shock).

Flies expressing RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4c747 show improved learning performance compared to controls after appetitive olfactory conditioning with 0.5M and 1.0M sucrose presented with a conditioned odor. The duration of starvation before the assay does not alter the enhanced learning performance of these flies. These flies show normal responses to odors and sucrose, indicating the phenotype is not caused by defective sensation.

Knockdown of Rdl using RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4P2.4.Pdf results in a small decrease in sleep and a small increase in sleep latency, during day and night.

Scer\GAL4c747/+;RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS/+ flies exhibit a 10%-20% enhanced performance in memory acquisition tests compared to controls, when trained with a 1 minute odour exposure paired with 1, 3 or 12 shocks. A similar enhanced performance is also seen in flies expressing RdldsRNA.8-10.Scer\UAS with Scer\GAL4c739.
