Larvae expressing Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4C57 have normal muscle size.

Expression of Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4C57 results in altered neuromuscular junction (NMJ) morphology in third instar larvae, and a decreased number of boutons per muscle area at the NMJ.

Marker expression indicates that the volume of subsynaptic reticulum (SSR) underlying NMJs is reduced when Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa is driven with Scer\GAL4C57. However, ectopic SSR-like structures are formed away from the NMJ and large ectopic vesicles form in the cytoplasm of muscle cells.

The ectopic subsynaptic reticulum-like structures seen in muscles expressing Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4C57 are not suppressed by dlg17.

The expansion of the subsynaptic reticulum of larval neuromuscular junctions due to dlg1Scer\UAS.cBa; Scer\GAL4BG487 is partially suppressed by co-expression of Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa.

Expression of Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4T80 rescues the lethality, defects in bouton morphology and decrease in muscle size that is seen in Syx18ex6 mutants.

Expression of Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4T80 does not rescue the decrease in evoked excitatory junctional potential (EJP) amplitude seen in Syx18ex6 mutants, but does rescue the EJP decay time constant and the miniature excitatory junctional potential (mEJP) amplitude in these animals. The frequency of mEJPs is almost rescued.

Expression of Syx18Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4C57 rescues the lethality and decrease in muscle size that is seen in Syx18ex6 mutants. However, no rescue of the bouton phenotypes is seen in these animals.
