In adults, these clones have disorganized ommatidial structure: interommatidial cells are missing and cone cells are condensed with severe cell surface defects. The space between cone and interommatidial cells is also dramatically increased, consistent with cone/pigment cell death. These clones (in the adult) are associated with increased reactive oxygen species production.
