Detailed Description

Heterozygotes do not show gross eye phenotypes.

Small homozygous eye clones have a slightly rough appearance at low penetrance.

Large homozygous eye clones (generated in a Minute background) exhibit a robust rough and glossy appearance, together with tissue necrosis of variable onset and penetrance.

opa1-likef02779 mutant clones (in a Minute background) in pupal eye discs at 42h after pupal formation have a significantly reduced number of inter-ommatidial cells associated with a high degree of mis-patterning. These clones (at 42h APF) are not associated with increased reactive oxygen species production.

At 42h after pupal formationopa1-likef02779 mutant clones (in a Minute background) in pupal eye discs exhibit pigmented cone cells with normal morphology and number. In adults, these clones have disorganized ommatidial structure: interommatidial cells are missing and cone cells are condensed with severe cell surface defects. The space between cone and interommatidial cells is also dramatically increased, consistent with cone/pigment cell death. These clones (in the adult) are associated with increased reactive oxygen species production.

opa1-likef02779 mutant clones in adult eyes display normal rhabdomere structure, but scarce and dysmorphic mitochondria.

Xenogenetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

Scer\GAL4ey.3.5.Exel-mediated expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa significantly reduces the glossy eye phenotype, but not the rough eye phenotype, of opa1-likef02779 large clones (induced in a Minute background).
