94% of Mmp2G535R/Mmp2Df animals survive to third instar, all of which pupariate, 47% undergo head eversion, 18% develop head bristles, but none eclose. 74% (n = 23) of these pupae have a melanized lump in the developing thorax, visible as a black spot through the pupal case. The black spot appears before head eversion, varies in size, and remains evident in animals with fully developed legs and bristles. Mmp2A218V/Mmp2Df animals survive to third instar, and 96% pupariate, but only 13% undergo head eversion, 6% develop head bristles and none eclose.
