Lethality acts in the 2nd/early 3rd instar. Number of boutons on embryonic somatic muscles is 50% wild type, though muscle surface area is normal. The size of the boutons is abnormally large, such that synaptic surface area for all boutons on a muscle is similar to that of wild type.

However, the number of boutons is not significantly different in flies expressing Hsap\VAPBP56S.Scer\UAS compared to controls. Moreover, no significant difference in EJPs or quantal sizes is observed in flies expressing Hsap\VAPBP56S.Scer\UAS.
