Ovaries from cherEP3715 females are dramatically reduced in size. and are comprised of short, squat ovarioles that usually appear as a single, distended germarium from which egg chambers fail to emerge. Closer examination these germaria shows that consecutive germline cysts are not properly packaged in follicular monolayers to form discrete egg chambers. In germaria from cherEP3715 homozygous adults, individual sixteen-cell germline cysts appear to form normally and the fusome disappears on schedule. Follicle cells extend projections to surround the germline cells. However, these extensions appear to be delayed since there are many more germline cells between the anterior tip of the germarium and where these extensions form than in wild-type. Migration of follicle cells to form the interfollicular stalk fails to occur. In fact these cells fail to even make the apical contacts that precede this migration. However, follicle cell apicobasal polarity is not directly affected. In addition, germline cells appear loosely packed and individual germ-cells often bulge out from a cyst, sometimes making contact with the basal membrane of the germarium.

The P{EP}cherEP3715 insertion does not disrupt cher function.

The notched wing phenotype caused by expression of PsnScer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4ct.PB is suppressed by co-expression of cherEP3715 (under the control of Scer\GAL4ct.PB). The extra scutellar macrochaetae seen when PsnScer\UAS.cGa is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 are suppressed by co-expression of cherEP3715 (under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237).

Comments

Precise excision of the P{EP} element reverts the modifying effect of cherEP3715 on the rough eye phenotype caused by expression of Hsap\MAPTV337M.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF.
