Ubiquitous expression of brZ2.hs does not cause malrotation of male genitalia. Partial rescue of br5/Y mutants, achieved by driving expression of the brZ2.hs transgene by three heat shocks at 37oC starting in the third instar results in small numbers of pharate adults, 93% of which have malrotated genitalia.
Over-expression of four copies of brZ2.hs using heat shock at 5 hours after ecdysis to the second instar causes a high rate of lethality at approximately 26 hours after the heat shock (the time of ecdysis from second to third instar). Double mouthhooks are seen in these dead larvae.
Animals carrying four copies of brZ2.hs and heat shocked at 56 hours after puparium formation develop into morphologically normal pharate adults.
In response to heatshock, ectopic dorsal appendage material is produced in the dorsal anterior region of the eggshell. 3-5 post heatshock about half of the eggs produced are abnormal, 5% of eggs laid hatching. From 5-24 hours post heatshock about 3/4 of eggs produced are abnormal, and 12% of eggs laid hatch. 24-48 hours post heatshock, about a 1/3 of eggs produced are abnormal, and 93% of eggs laid hatch.

Salivary gland histolysis is rescued in about half of ftz-f1ex7/ftz-f103649 transheterozygotes when brZ2.hs is expressed using heat shock at 10 hours after puparium formation.
The br Z2 protein isoform encoded by brZ2.hs provides br+ function and partial 2Bc+ function.
