Homozygous clones in the dorsal surface of the wing differentiate ventral structures.

Transforms ventral wing into dorsal wing. In clones, homozygous Dlw1 cells show transformation from dorsal to ventral.

Transformation of ventral to dorsal wing compartment in heterozygotes. Extra copies of Dlw+, provided by Dp(3;1)B152, neither suppress or enhance the wing transformation of heterozygotes but does rescue the lethality of homozygotes who survive to adulthood with no sign of the wing transformation. Homozygous somatic dorsal clones induced at any larval stage show dorsal to ventral wing transformation, the two dorsal rows at the anterior triple row region are replaced by a single row with ventral bristle morphology. Ventral clones differentiate only wild type ventral bristles. Transformation by clones in the posterior wing compartment are seen by a double row of elongated hairs in the alula. Clones have no effect elsewhere except in the dorsal notum which may differentiate extra macrochaetes. Pc21 Dlw+/Pc+ Dlw1 double heterozygotes have an enhanced ventral to dorsal wing transformation.

Heterozygotes display homeotic transformation of ventral to dorsal wing.

Expression of BxScer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1 under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 in a Dlw1/+ background restores campaniform sensilla and corrugation on the dorsal surface of wing vein 3, indicating that these cells have dorsal identity. The wing is overgrown in these flies and an ectopic posterior wing margin is induced in the dorsal surface along the anterior-posterior compartment boundary.
