su(Hw)7/Df(3R)su(Hw)-A1933 transheterozygous females are fertile but show loss of the gypsy insulator function (assayed through body, wing and bristle phenotypes induced by mutations in the y, ct and f genes).

P{SUPor-P} induced double strand breakage repair is increased about twofold in a su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 background compared to wild-type. This phenotype is also seen in flies derived from su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 parents.

Partial suppression of the y2 phenotype.

su(Hw)2/su(Hw)7 heterozygotes almost completely suppress the "Hw" phenotype acHw-1+R5, extra macrochaetae are seen on the pleura and postnotum. This was accompanied by a 2--3 fold reduction of ac RNA, sc RNA levels were unchanged. A positive correlation can be seen between increased levels of ac transcripts and the appearance of the "Hw" phenotype.

Introduction of su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 restores viability to bgm38f-ex animals.

A su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 background almost completely suppresses the wing defects seen in apf00451 mutant flies.

A su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 mutant background has no effect on the wing defects seen in aploxP.MCP-PRE.MM mutant flies.

A su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 background is unable to suppress the enhancer blocking seen in flies expressing y62D.DNR. The same light wing blade and body pigmentation is seen as is seen in y62D.DNR alone.

wScer\FRT.S.P1\loxP.S flies carrying su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 tend to have lighter eye pigmentation than wScer\FRT.S.P1\loxP.S flies.

wP1\loxP.S.dW.Scer\FRT.S flies carrying su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 tend to have darker eye pigmentation than wP1\loxP.S.dW.Scer\FRT.S flies.

wΔS.dW.Scer\FRT.S flies carrying su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 tend to have lighter eye pigmentation than wΔS.dW.Scer\FRT.S flies.

Body colour: flies carrying yEye125bpYSW.Scer\FRT.P1\loxP (in a y- background) have wild-type levels of pigmentation if they are also carrying su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7. In(1)y3P ; su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 animals show loss of a number of bristles. Bristle pigmentation is normal in these animals. In(1)scV2 ; su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 animals show loss of a number of bristles. Bristle pigmentation shows mild variegation in these animals; about half the bristles are yellow. In(1)sc8 ; su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 animals show loss of a number of bristles. Bristle pigmentation is normal in these animals. sc5 ; su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 animals show loss of a number of bristles. Bristle pigmentation is normal in these animals.

Pigmentation of y1/y1; yP1\loxP.su(Hw)BR-y-AS-C.-900 animals is largely unaffected by a su(Hw)7/Df(3R)su(Hw)V background.

In a su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 background, the adbdominal phenotype of Abd-BFab7-2.gypsy\su(Hw)BR-340/+ males reverts to that seen in Fab-72 flies.

su(Hw)2/su(Hw)7 heteroallelic combination strongly suppresses gypsy insertions.

su(Hw)V/su(Hw)7 restores wild type coloration to y-800, y-800R, y-1868, y+660R and y+660.

Dominant suppressor of ctK and ctMRpN30, but suppression is less complete than for su(Hw)V.

Heterozygotes with su(Hw)2 suppress oblique truncated wing of rsP1 and rsP2. Effect on rsP1 is recessive. Effect on rsP2 is semidominant. Suppression not temperature-dependent as previously reported (Cramer DIS 55:197 ).

Comments

Neither su(Hw)A2663 nor su(Hw)A460 complements su(Hw)7, a separation-of-function alleles that only affects the gypsy insulator function (assayed through body, wing and bristle phenotypes induced by mutations in the y, ct and f genes), this allele is complemented by su(Hw)M393 (a separation-of-function allele that impairs female fertility).
