Shows brain tumours when heterozygous with the MBT chromosome. Pupal lethal when heterozygous with the MBT chromosome.

Stronger dorsalising phenotype is seen at 18oC than 29oC. Heterozygotes with pll3 produce moderately dorsalised embryos, with pll2 produce strongly dorsalised embryos.

Extreme pll1 embryos consist of a long, hollow tube with dorsal cuticular structures. Injection of wild-type cytoplasm into pll1 embryos partially restores the normal embryonic pattern of development.

As in the mutant dl, lethal embryos produced by pll1 females lack ventral and lateral elements.
