Cytoplasmic dumping is blocked in hemizygous egg chambers. The cytoplasmic actin cytoskeleton of nurse cells shows major disruptions, while the cortical actin appears normal in homozygous females.

Chromatin organization in the pseudonurse cells differs slightly from wild type. Oligotene fibrils and occasional polytene chromosomes are interspersed with wild-type chromatin fibers.

When XY flies are transformed into pseudofemales by traHsp83.PS, otu activity is sufficient to allow XY germ cell proliferation. Frequency of tumorous egg cysts is approximately equal to that of otu+/Y pseudofemales.

DIF (differentiated) class allele.

Late stage arrest of oogenesis.

Spermatogenesis normal but mating behaviour fails because wild type females refuse to react to the courtship attempts of mutant males. Effect is not absolute, and depends on allele (there is a strong correlation between male sterility and severity of impairment in the female phenotype) and varies between affecting 6.7% (otu14) and 86.6% (otu12) of mutant males.

Homozygous and hemizygous females have a differentiated ovary phenotype.

97% of homozygous ovarioles produce nurse cell/oocyte syncytia. Most otu11/otu14 or otu14/otu13 female flies are fertile.

Differentiated allele; 97% of homozygous ovarioles contain differentiated cystocytes forming oocytes. Over half of hemizygous ovarioles contain differentiated cystocytes (forming pseudonurse cells, nurse cells or oocytes).

differentiated; ovarian chambers with pseudonurse cells or nurse cell/oocyte synctia

Differentiated (DIF) class allele. The ovarian phenotype of flies transheterozygous for otu14 and a number of other otu mutations has been analysed.

Differentiated class (DIF) of otu alleles.

The only allele of otu of 13 tested that failed to show a dominant interaction with ovoD2 or ovoD3.

Weak DIF class of otu allele. P{otu-98} and P{otu-104} completely restore fertility.
