In BRWD3s5349 mutant clones, the photoreceptors project axons to the brain normally, but do not differentiate into mature neurons. The differentiation of R7 and cone cells is arrested. At the adult stage the number of surviving BRWD3s5349 mutant ommatidia is much smaller than in wild type controls.
