Detailed Description

hyd15/hydC017 mutants exhibit abnormalities in spermatogenesis. One such abnormality is for nuclei scattered through the elongated cysts to exhibit a round shape instead of a 'needle' shape. In rare cases, the group of needle-shaped nuclei can be found in the correct place in the cyst; however, some of the nuclei are evidently incorrectly condensed. Approximately 90% of nuclei and micronuclei do not reach the correct cyst pole.

hyd15/hydC017 mutant spermatocytes exhibit defects in cytokinesis such as the formation of two spindles in one meiotic cell. The meiotic products may have unequal amounts of chromatin or mitochondrial material. Centrosome behavior is also affected. Meiotic chromosomes are not correctly attached to the spindle in 50% of hyd15/hydC017 spermatids.

pAbpk10109/hyd15 trans-heterozygous double mutants exhibit spermatogenesis defects. The morphology of nuclei in the sperm head bundle are indistinguishable from the control but the nuclei are frequently scattered abnormally. Cytokinetic abnormalities are also increased in these double mutants.

The extent of ectopic wing vein formation found in Scer\GAL4GMR.PF CblDv.Scer\UAS flies is enhanced in a hyd15 mutant background but does not affect the eye roughening phenotype.
