Expression resembles that of endogenous ab expression, as well as that of EcollacZab-BL97. Expression is observed in the midline of the CNS at embryonic stage 9, in the embryonic epidermis, and in syncytial muscle fibers .

Expression is observed beginning at embryonic stage 10 in the presumptive precursor cells of the stomatogastric nervous system. Intially, expression is homogeneous in the clypeo-labrum and the esophagus primordium. At stage 12, expression is observed in the invaginating stomatograstric nervous system precursor cells (iSNSPs) though not in the single ase-expressing tip stomatogastric nervous system precursor cell (tSNSP) which delaminates from each iSNSP pouch at the end of embryonic stage 12. Expression is lost in later stages in the delaminating stomatogastric nervous system precursor cells (dSNSPs).

Expression is observed in epidermal cells from embryonic stage 11 until hatching.
