Hecw^KO homozygotes display a progressive decrease in climbing ability; the brain of 30-days old adults show extensive apoptosis and vacuolization. Females show oogenesis defects: egg chambers show altered number of germ cells, with increased or decreased number of nurse cells and ring canals, and compound egg chambers; there are late-stage apoptotic egg chambers that are usually absent in controls.
