Photoreceptor cells R1-R6 undergo light-dependent retinal degeneration in mutant flies, while photoreceptor cell R7 is not affected. After 6 days in constant light, the mutant R1-R6 rhabdomeres have short microvilli and the plasma membrane at the base of the rhabdomere appears as a catacomb-like extracellular space.
