hydC017 homozygous spermatogenic cells do not develop into spermatocytes.

hydhs1/hydC017 and hyd15/hydC017 mutants both exhibit abnormalities in spermatogenesis, with hydhs1/hydC017 exhibiting a more severe phenotype than hyd15/hydC017 mutants. One such abnormality is for nuclei scattered through the elongated cysts to exhibit a round shape instead of a 'needle' shape. In rare cases, the group of needle-shaped nuclei can be found in the correct place in the cyst; however, some of the nuclei are evidently incorrectly condensed. Approximately 90% of nuclei and micronuclei do not reach the correct cyst pole.

hyd15/hydC017 mutant spermatocytes exhibit defects in cytokinesis such as the formation of two spindles in one meiotic cell. The meiotic products may have unequal amounts of chromatin or mitochondrial material. Centrosome behavior is also affected. Meiotic chromosomes are not correctly attached to the spindle in 50% of hyd15/hydC017 spermatids.
