Many ommatidia in animals expressing freddsRNA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF over- or under-rotate; the variance (s.d.) in degree of rotation is greater than in wild type. The mutant s.d. does not become statistically distinct from wild type until row 7 in the third larval instar eye disc, approximately 2-3 rows after the initiation of rotation (the time at which the anterior and posterior cone cells join the ommatidial precursor). The s.d. is still significantly greater in the mutants than in wild type at row 15, when rotation is complete in wild type.

When freddsRNA.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 larvae develop into adults that display a range of phenotypes, including loss of epithelium resulting in a smaller notum and scutellum and loss or duplication of sensory bristles. The phenotypes are more severe is raised at 29oC. Ectopic sensory organ precursors (SOPs) are seen in the dorsal-most region of the wing disc. This is associated with an increase in cell death in the region. When freddsRNA.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4Eq1 larvae develop into adults that display a range of phenotypes, including loss of epithelium, resulting in a pinched appearance of the nota. When freddsRNA.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4ap-md544 ectopic sensory organ precursors (SOPs) are seen in the wing disc. When HLHm7Scer\UAS.cdCa is added freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 animals, no effect is seen on the HLHm7Scer\UAS.cdCa phenotype. When freddsRNA.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, a rough eye phenotype is seen, with missing or duplicated bristles or fused ommatidia.

When Df(1)sc10-1 is added to freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237, animals show no bristles and have a near wild-type notum morphology. When freddsRNA.Scer\UAS and NScer\UAS.cSa are both driven by Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237, a phenotype that is intermediate between the two individual phenotypes. The addition of freddsRNA.Scer\UAS to Su(H)Scer\UAS.cKa, Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 animals has no effect on the Su(H)Scer\UAS.cKa phenotype. The cell death phenotype seen in Su(H)Scer\UAS.cKa animals is however, alleviated by Su(H)Scer\UAS.cKa expression. The addition of Su(H)2/+ to freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 animals has no detectable effect on the freddsRNA.Scer\UAS phenotype. However when Su(H)2/+ is added to freddsRNA.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, an enhancement of the rough eye phenotype is seen. The addition of heterozygous ed2B8 enhances the rough eye phenotype seen in freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF animals. The addition of heterozygous Gap1B2 moderately enhances the rough eye phenotype seen in freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF animals. However only 30% of animals exhibited increased roughness. The addition of heterozygous pntΔ88 suppresses the rough eye phenotype seen in freddsRNA.Scer\UAS, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF animals. However only 40% of animals exhibited decreased roughness. The addition of freddsRNA.Scer\UAS enhances the effect of HScer\UAS.cNa (driven by Scer\GAL4GMR.PF) on eye morphology.
