    Detailed Description

Homozygous females have ovaries that rarely form egg chambers (oogenesis is blocked at the germarial stages in most cases). When an egg chamber forms it often has less than the normal complement of 15 nurse cells and 1 oocyte. Wings often have regions missing from the posterior wing margin, as well as the anterior/posterior border. Eyes have irregularly shaped facets and inappropriately positioned bristles. One or more ocellar bristles are often missing. There is a partially penetrant male-sterile phenotype. The R1 and R6 photoreceptor precursor cells are often absent in developing mutant eye imaginal discs. Some ommatidial clusters in pupal eye discs contain fewer than the normal 4 cone cells. Some clusters with extra photoreceptor and cone cells are also seen. Mutant eye discs show a mildly abnormal pattern of BrdU incorporating cells. This is particularly apparent in the second mitotic wave, which is normally a smooth stripe, but is disrupted in mutant discs. The mitotic zones of the eye disc are disrupted in mutants (normally there are 2 zones of mitosis); both zones are expanded and the boundary between the two is obscured. Cell death is increased in mutant eye discs compared to wild type. The apoptotic cells in mutant eye discs are mostly anterior to the morphogenetic furrow, where the majority of cell proliferation occurs.
